SERVICES

If you have concerns about your child or adolescent an assessment may be appropriate. Sometimes parents are concerned about their child's progress with schoolwork, emotions, behavior or relationships, or other aspects of their development. An assessment can provide useful information and direction for ways to help. Sometimes you need ongoing support or assistance in navigating complex school and life decisions. Consultation or Therapy services can be helpful.
Psycho-educational Assessments.

This is a comprehensive assessment of a child's cognitive, academic and social emotional functioning. It provides a greater understanding of strengths and areas of challenge in the context of a child's environments of home and school. The assessment process includes gathering information through interview, review of relevant records, questionnaires for parents and teachers, and psychometric testing. Parents are provided with a report which summarizes the results of the assessment and provides relevant recommendations for home and school. This is discussed during a feedback meeting. The child will be given feedback in an age-appropriate manner.

Psycho-educational assessments can characterize unique learning profiles, and identify giftedness, disorders of learning, attention, or mental health concerns as well as highlight a child's strengths.

Neuropsychological Assessments

This is a more lengthy and comprehensive assessment. It can be appropriate for children with more complex neurological or medical conditions such as seizure disorders or traumatic brain injury. It involves a more in-depth assessment of cognitive functioning in the areas of memory, attention, executive functions, language, and visual skills. Socio-emotional functioning is also assessed since it influences a child's cognitive functioning and is impacted by the challenges a child may face.

Consultation

Sometimes it is helpful to have professional involvement for problem solving challenges at school or home or for help with program planning. Dr. Fennell is available for consultations.

Support for Families and Youth Living with Autism

Dr. Fennell is passionate about working with children and youth with autism and their families. She provides sensitive and supportive assessments and therapy tailored for the individual child but informed by current knowledge. She believes that we have as much to learn from listening to the voices of individuals with autism as we do from science and brings this open approach to her work. Her work draws from models of relationship development intervention, floortime, positive behavior supports, behavior intervention, and inclusive education.

Intervention and Parent Support Services

Dr. Fennell provides therapy services for children and youth drawing from her experience working in a pediatric tertiary care hospital, private practice and youth forensics setting. Her approach is grounded in person-centered and cognitive-behavioral methods although she is influenced by many areas to develop an individual therapy plan for each client. Dr. Fennell believes the foundation of a successful therapy journey is the relationship developed between client and therapist.

Dr. Fennell enjoys supporting parents in learning more about their children and finding new ways to connect and support their children's growth. While working with parents is often part of a child-based intervention, Dr. Fennell offers parent sessions focused on supporting their child. She believes that parents are the most valuable and powerful agent of change in a child's life.
